According to Skydance Television, the American independent production company has acquired the global live-action television rights for the Sword Art Online (SAO) franchise from Kadokawa.

The goal is to fast-track the launch of a live-action television series. Laeta Kalogridis will write the script and executive produce along with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross of Skydance. Kalogridis mentioned "for years I have been inspired by the inventive and masterful storytelling of the SAO franchise."

Skydance Interactive is planning a Sword Art Online virtual reality experience after the television series. The company plans to launch "a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live action franchise extensions across our business verticals," said by Skydance Media CEO Ellison.

Sword Art Online is originally a light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. It inspired two television anime adaptations, an anime special, and an upcoming anime movie. It also inspired multiple manga series, games, and a virtual reality demonstration in Japan.

The story follows Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya, a boy who enters a virtual-reality, massively multiplayer online (MMO) world called “Sword Art Online”. There is no escape from this world unless the player clears the game, but "game over" means the certain death – both virtual and real.
