New Gintama Movie Announced and Anime Series Returning in October

According to the 39th issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump magazine, Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama would be getting its 2nd anime film adaptation in 2013. It was also announced that the new Gintama TV anime series will start on October 4 this year.



Now it has been confirmed by the official website for the Gintama TV anime series that TV Tokyo will air the upcoming series every Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. In addition to “Yorinuki Gintama-san” (a repeat of selected Gintama anime episodes), the broadcast will include new Gintama episodes. The main staff and cast will return for the new episodes.


Also, the second Gintama movie has been green-lit for production. The new movie will come out sometime in 2013 and the all-new story will be written by the original manga author.



Gintama is written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi. The manga has been serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump since 2004. The story takes place in Edo (known as Tokyo today), which was captured by aliens called “Amanto”. It’s a science fiction historical comedy that revolves around a samurai named Sakata Gintoki and his friends.


The first Gintama movie, “Gintama: Shinyaku Benizakura-Hen”, was released in 2010. And the manga was previously adapted into a TV anime series from April 2006 to March 2010, and April 2011 to March 2012.
