According to the staff of the Death Note manga-inspired drama, the cast is different from the previous live-action film. The new series will also add a character N (Near) which did not appear in the previous live-action and the musical. The drama will also make a feature of a brand-new original story. The series will premiere on NTV in Japan in July. NTV has also set up a website for the drama.

The official announcement included an image of Ryuk saying "A serialized drama... Interesting!!..."

The manga, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, follows Light, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook that gr ants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face they know. Light attempts to create and rule a world "cleansed of evil" as "God" using the notebook, and a detective L want to stop him.

The 12-volume manga was first serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2003 to 2006. It has already inspired three live-action films and a 37-episode television anime series in Japan.

A short time ago, the manga inspires a musical performed by a Japanese and American team. The musical will run at Tokyo's Nissay Theatre from April 6 to April 29. Then, it travels to Osaka and Nagoya in May, and it will also run in South Korea from July to August but with a different cast.
